Loan terms in simple words
- EMI
- Equated Monthly Instalment. The fixed amount you pay every month until the loan is fully repaid.
- Interest rate
- The cost of borrowing, shown as a percentage of the loan amount for a year.
- Tenure
- The time you take to repay the loan, for example 12 months or 5 years.
- Principal
- The amount you actually borrow, before any interest is added.
- Processing fee
- A one-time charge that many lenders take when they process your loan.
- Credit score
- A number, usually between 300 and 900 in India, that shows how well you have repaid loans in the past.
- Collateral
- An asset such as a house, car or gold that you pledge to the lender until the loan is repaid.
Before you borrow
- Borrow only what you need and check that the EMI fits your monthly budget.
- Compare the interest rate, processing fee and other charges from more than one lender.
- Choose a bank or an NBFC registered with the RBI, and never pay money in advance to get a loan.
- Read the loan agreement and the key fact statement fully before you sign.
